The Challenges of Youth
Growing up has always been hard. But in an age of social media, where skin-deep judgment can be delivered instantaneously and embarrassing memories can live forever online, there is unprecedented stress on the mental health of the young. Throw in the rigors of educational attainment and the pitfalls of a developing social life, and the burden can easily become too much to bear. For the children of high-net-worth individuals, the feeling of scrutiny and the weight of heightened expectations only exacerbate the problem.
This can leave us feeling entirely alone. But in fact, these problems are extremely common. 20% of adolescents will experience a mental health problem – in any given year. Between 2018 and 2019, almost a quarter of 17-year-olds reported having self-harmed. And the severity of the problem is only deepening: when polled, 83% of young people with mental health needs felt that the coronavirus pandemic had made their issues worse.
Young people can often feel overlooked, especially when it comes to mental health. Unhappiness and anxiety can be an expected and even natural part of the struggle of personal growth. But this expectation makes it easy to miss the signs of something deeper and more significant. Our experience in youth mental health allows us to look beyond the surface, identifying the key issues at play and helping our younger patients to pursue their journey of personal discovery.

A Supportive Environment
Children and teenagers can often find it difficult to open up to parents about serious issues they may be battling with, so our clinicians are well versed in helping younger adults and children feel comfortable enough to discuss their thoughts and feelings in a way that they perhaps can’t at home.
Our expert Young People’s specialists will be able to discern for the parent or the carer if the issue is a serious mental health one or not, whilst also providing skilled support to both the young person and their family.
Our goal at Addcounsel is to remove the stressors that young people often feel overwhelmed by, in order to facilitate an open and direct approach to treatment. Our luxury residential facility in Mayfair offers freedom from pressure and scrutiny – clients work on a one-to-one basis with a live-in psychotherapist backed by our expert team, in an intimate and supportive environment.
