We all know that growing up can be extremely difficult. Emotions are often heightened as a child seeks to navigate their own path and evolution into adulthood. Because of this, it can be quite difficult for a parent or carer to discern when a child is just behaving like a child, or when the behaviour is linked to some deeper mental health disorder and they should seek specialist help.

In the UK, NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) under the Freedom of Information Act show that only about 1.5% of the population of boys between 6 and 17 were treated for ADHD far below global estimates that indicate 5.3% of children have the disorder. The proportion of girls in receipt of an ADHD prescription is even lower: just 0.35% of the population of girls aged between 6 and 17.

Young people can come up against a whole range of difficulties during childhood and adolescence including many intense forms of pressure from school, family, friends, social media. Not to mention coping with bullying, cyber bullying, their identity, their sexuality and simply getting through puberty. Such a significant range of stressors placed on young people can lead to emotional struggles and experiments with risky and unhealthy behaviour.

For some, this experimenting will then develop into further more severe mental health conditions such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Eating Disorders (Binge Eating Disorder, Othorexia and Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED) )
  • Substance Abuse Disorder (misuse of drugs such as Marijuana , club drugs (Ketamine, GHB, Ecstasy, MDMA), Cocaine, Alcohol and many more)

There could also be issues with Behavioural Addictions such as Gaming, Internet Use Disorder, Porn Addiction, Sex and Love Addiction and Co-Dependancy. 5% of teens are also suffering from ADHD and trying to navigate their way through adolescence whilst also coping with the unique challenges that brings for them.

A large number of young adults today struggle with feelings of failure and low self esteem especially if they don’t get certain grades, if they drop out of school or university and have to move back in with their parents. Many children are struggling with the trauma of broken down family systems when parents divorce or loved ones pass away.

All of this contributes to the rise of the alarming statistic that teenage suicide rates rose by 67% between 2010 and 2018.At Addcounsel, we understand that behavioural, emotional and mental health problems can affect you at any age. In fact, amongst children and young people they are rising faster than amongst any other demographic. Studies have shown that almost one in four individuals under the age of 19 will experience a mental health problem.
