Psychodynamic Therapy

Living with a mental illness or addiction can be exhausting. Not only does it affect how you feel, but it has a trickle-down effect of seeping its way into your everyday life. More often than not, your negative emotions turn into defence mechanisms that you slowly build up over the years to keep your painful feelings and memories in your unconscious mind. This can leave you feeling like you have lost meaning in your life and creates difficulty forming and maintaining personal relationships.

Helping you bring your unconscious mind to the conscious, psychodynamic therapy promotes self-expression and insight to unveil the content of your unconscious. Effective in treating anxiety, addiction, eating disorders, and primarily depression, the treatment focuses on unravelling the past to change the present.

Addcounsel offers psychodynamic therapy for a range of mental health disorders. Treatment is carried out by our expert team of highly skilled mental health specialists who work together to ensure you receive an unrivalled level of care. We understand that no two experiences of mental health are the same; you are your own person who deserves specialised care. So, we take a ‘one client at a time’ approach to ensure an individualised treatment plan is in place for each client to ensure a successful and lasting recovery.

We are here to help

How Psychodynamic Therapy Works

Psychodynamic therapy revolves around making the unconscious become conscious. This therapy uses theories and techniques that are based on recognising, acknowledging, understanding, expressing, and overcoming repressed, negative emotions. Our therapists will create an equal and trusting relationship with you by ensuring you feel unconditional acceptance. They will guide you in gaining an insight into your life and problems by allowing you the space to discuss emotions and thoughts freely. You may cover difficulties, fears, dreams, and desires.

A key component of psychodynamic therapy is delving into your early life experiences. We find that many of the patterns found in our thoughts and beliefs begin in childhood and that these experiences are extremely influential in the development of who we are and how we function as adults. Our therapists will work with you to allow you to discover the connection between the dots of your past experiences and current problems. Some techniques that may be used are:

  • Free association practices
  • Talking openly, in an unstructured and uncensored way, about once automatic ways of thinking and behaving
  • Role-playing situations so you can identify how you contribute to relationship patterns
  • Identification of ways you avoid distressing thoughts and feelings
  • Transference of feelings to reveal negative patterns of behaviour

How Psychodynamic Therapy Can Help You

Undergoing psychodynamic therapy treatment at Addcounsel will give you the tools and resources to effectively analyse and resolve your current difficulties and give you the opportunity for deep exploration and analysis of early life experiences and emotions. You can then use these experiences to create changes in your behaviour in any current and future relationships.

Our end goal is for you to feel a remission of symptoms alongside an increase in self-worth, awareness, better use of talents and abilities, and an enhanced ability to develop and sustain healthy and satisfying relationships. With help from our caring and compassionate team of highly skilled therapists, you will learn how to let go of unhelpful and obstructive defence mechanisms that are affecting your day-to-day life.

Once therapy has ended, you will feel a significant improvement in your life as you will have a strengthened self-understanding of how to break your self-defeating cycles. You will be able to effectively address issues with avoidance, all, in turn, allowing you to make better choices and feel better long term. By freeing yourself from your past, you will be able to live a better future.

Addcounsel are the only luxury treatment centre in London who offer a network of 80 specialists on a one-to-one basis to their clients. We pride ourselves on focussing on clinical excellence, meaning that we are client focussed but results driven. We understand what it is to work with wealthy clients; we know that it is not always easy and we know how to treat the complex and unique challenges it can entail.
We carry out a thorough diagnosis with our team of expert medical and psychiatric practitioners; this enables us to not only know what the client’s immediate problem is but the underlying factors which may be affecting it. We use this to provide a bespoke holistic treatment program in which every single aspect of the client is looked after, from their physical to their mental health. We are well equipped to match both our clients therapeutic and lifestyle needs, and we provide ongoing care plans with the goal of enabling our clients to have long lasting and consistent recovery.

Our treatment programs are delivered on a case-by-case basis. Humans are all individuals, and at Addcounsel we recognise that. This is why our program is always tailored to the needs of the client as a person, rather than trying to apply a “one-size-fits-all” treatment model. However, some of the therapies our clients can expect to receive are:

  • Psychotherapy
  • EMDR
  • Family Systems Therapy
  • Spiritual counselling
  • Mindfulness
  • RTMS
  • Somantic Experiencing
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT
  • Positive psychology
  • Hypnotherapy

In short, no. Our staff are very experienced in dealing with high-profile individuals and as such we understand the value of complete privacy. The only way that someone will find out that you attended Addcounsel is if you choose to tell them.

Our treatment programs are bespoke, and as such they do not have to have a set finish date. If you decide that you need to extend your stay with us, then we will extend your stay as long as you want.
If you decide that you need additional help upon leaving treatment, we offer tailored aftercare plans which can be carried out all over the world. This means that at any point you can have a member of our team with you, wherever you decide to go.

Absolutely. At Addcounsel, we pride ourselves on minimal disruption to the lifestyles of our clients. We want them to feel at home and comfortable during their time with us, so your staff can either stay with you or we can accommodate them in one of our exclusive Central London properties. We do provide a chef, but you are of course welcome to bring your own.
Addcounsel is also able to provide house staff, butlers, and private security if our clients require it.
