Luxury, Private Porn Addiction Treatment

Private Treatment That Focuses on Treating the Whole Person

At Addcounsel, we understand the impact of untreated porn addiction and how it impacts everyday life. While some can use porn without any consequences, an individual whose consumption of pornography has become compulsive will find that their capacity to function in various spheres of life is being gradually eroded.  Intimacy will be increasingly avoided leading to serious harm to personal relationships and potentially a complete breakdown in a marriage.

Without the appropriate treatment, porn addiction will compromise professional competence/proficiency, interpersonal relations and will eventually have a severe impact on mental health. Many individuals addicted to consuming porn will experience bouts of depression, cravings when not using, obsessive and intrusive sexual thoughts, suicidal ideation, anxiety, and chronic shame.

You don’t have to go through this alone. Our specialists have developed a “whole person” approach to porn addiction treatment, addressing the symptoms, triggers, and causes of your condition. We will help you develop effective, lifelong strategies to manage your condition and eventually abstain from using, ensuring a sustained and long-term recovery.

Our dedicated team will guide you through the entire porn addiction treatment process from start to finish, in the comfort and anonymity of your own discreet, luxury rehabilitation accommodation in Mayfair, Chelsea, or Notting Hill, London.

Understanding Porn Addiction

What is porn addiction?

So, what is porn addiction? The condition is a process addiction which involves an emotional and psychological compulsion to consume porn whether it be visually, aurally or (less commonly now due to the proliferation of explicit online content) via graphic print media. Withdrawal symptoms are commonly experienced when access to pornographic content is temporarily ceased, whether this be voluntarily, or due to access constraints.

Porn addiction is viewed by many professionals as an offshoot of sex addiction or a hypersexual disorder (such as compulsive masturbation). However, some health professionals view the condition as a separate disorder from sex addiction entirely because a person addicted to porn may be able to withdraw completely from any form of physical sexual activity with another person.

Being addicted to pornography has the capacity to hijack the human brain’s reward system in the same way that an individual addicted to drugs will have a sudden influx of dopamine, activating the pleasure and reward systems in the brain. For instance, in 2013, the Welcome Trust funded a study on the effects of porn addiction on the brain. Researchers from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge found that ventral striatum—an area in the brain which is a reward centre involving processing reward, motivation, and pleasure—would light up in the brain of a sexually compulsive person unable to stop viewing porn. The researchers discovered that when a porn addict viewed a sexually explicit image, monitored brain activity would mirror that of a drug addict when shown an image of say, cocaine.

How is porn misused?

It’s estimated that 30% of all traffic on the internet is related to porn, from videos and webcams to explicit written content and photographic images. As a result of easy access to smartphones, children as young as nine are casually watching porn and even being tricked into sharing images via webcam. Instant access to tens of thousands of free porn websites, is now ubiquitous and bears little resemblance to the relatively recent era when a porn addict had to sit in a dark smoke-filled cinema to access porn films, or furtively obtain explicit material in a backstreet shop or through the post.

While many individuals (and couples) will indulge in watching porn online and/or reading an erotic novel, some will end up misusing porn. For example, their increase in usage will increasingly disrupt social obligations and leisure activities due to having binged on porn the previous night and consequently feeling drained and lacking in any energy or enthusiasm. They may start to watch porn secretly on their smartphone at work or while travelling. At this stage, some individuals will rapidly develop a dependency and ultimately an addiction. Many porn addicts (some of whom are now in their fifties and sixties) report that a dependency developed in their teens.
