EDMR

We understand how challenging it can be to come to terms with a traumatic or deeply distressing experience. The physical and psychological effects of the event can stay with you for months or even years. Trauma memories are stored in the brain differently than other kinds of memories. They are stored with no ‘timestamp’ which is one reason that flashbacks can seem so real and current when a person is triggered.

Living with the post traumatic distress of an experience can be debilitating. You may feel frustrated and even debilitated by the effect that unprocessed trauma can have on day-to-day life.

However, we offer a method for getting to the root of the traumatic experience that causes daily stress and suffering in a therapy called Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).

This has been specifically designed to alleviate psychological distress associated with traumatic memories and is formally recognized as an effective form of treatment for trauma by the World Health Organisation.
EMDR combines side-to-side eye movements with talk therapy in a specific and structured setting. EMDR helps you process the negative or distressing images, body sensations, and emotions that are linked to the traumatic memory and as a result relieves the symptoms that you were suffering.
At Addcounsel we work with leading psychologists and therapists to deliver EMDR therapy, taking a ‘whole-person’ approach to treatment, ensuring your individual needs and experiences are always prioritised. Fully personalised treatment plans and discreet, private care ensures treatment is done in a safe environment free from external stress.

How EDMR Works

EMDR therapy is a reprocessing therapy that alleviates symptoms of trauma or PTSD by reprocessing and changing the way traumatic memories are stored in your brain until they are no longer psychologically disruptive to your life. This is done in eight phases.
Phase 1: Evaluation
A leading EMDR therapist will review your symptoms and ask you to briefly talk about distressing events in your life that may be causing disruption.
Phase 2: Preparation and Resourcing
A therapist will ensure you feel equipped with the resources to cope with the emotional or psychological stress that may arise. You will be taught grounding, as well as relaxation and stress management techniques such as deep breathing and mindfulness exercises.
Phase 3: Assessment and Selection
You will select a specific memory to target, in addition to:

  • A visual image related to the memory
  • A negative self-belief
  • Emotions and body sensations related to the memory
  • A positive belief or thought

Phase 4: Desensitisation
You will be asked to focus on the negative memory while being guided through bilateral stimulation (BLS). This involves making side-to-side eye movements, listening to a repetitive noise in headphones that alternates from one ear to the other, or tapping either side of your body.
Phase 5: Installation
The therapist will work with you to ‘install’ a positive self-belief or image in replacement of the unwanted negative belief or memory, focusing on this during BLS.
Phase 6: Body Scan
While thinking of the incident, you will scan your body for any uncomfortable physical sensations to check for lingering somatic distress.
Phase 7: Closure
The therapist will discuss your progress and may ask you to keep a diary or log throughout the week.
Phase 8: Re-evaluation
During the next session, your therapist will ask about the memories and feelings you addressed in the previous session in order to examine your progress.

How EDMR Can Help You

For those living with post traumatic stress disorder, sounds, images, or sensations can trigger distressing reactions in seemingly safe situations that cause them to relive the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks. This can also lead to feelings of isolation, irritability, trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, and guilt.
EMDR therapy can help you regain control of your life and your past and improve overall mental health.Therapy sessions can also help you understand yourself better, and the way that certain events or memories affect relationships, decision making, and your career.
Symptoms of PTSD can cause severe emotional distress and unconfortable physical sensations including chronic pain and even increase the risk of suicide or suicidal ideations. EMDR is a therapy that helps you uncover and address the root of these problems as opposed to just the symptoms and day-to-day challenges. At Addcounsel we work with leading psychologists and therapists to deliver EMDR therapy, taking a ‘whole-person’ approach to treatment ensuring your individual needs and experiences are always prioritised. Fully personalised treatment plans and discreet, private care ensures treatment is done in a safe environment free from external stress.

Addcounsel are the only luxury treatment centre in London who offer a network of 80 specialists on a one-to-one basis to their clients. We pride ourselves on focussing on clinical excellence, meaning that we are client focussed but results driven. We understand what it is to work with wealthy clients; we know that it is not always easy and we know how to treat the complex and unique challenges it can entail.
We carry out a thorough diagnosis with our team of expert medical and psychiatric practitioners; this enables us to not only know what the client’s immediate problem is but the underlying factors which may be affecting it. We use this to provide a bespoke holistic treatment program in which every single aspect of the client is looked after, from their physical to their mental health. We are well equipped to match both our clients therapeutic and lifestyle needs, and we provide ongoing care plans with the goal of enabling our clients to have long lasting and consistent recovery.

Our treatment programs are delivered on a case-by-case basis. Humans are all individuals, and at Addcounsel we recognise that. This is why our program is always tailored to the needs of the client as a person, rather than trying to apply a “one-size-fits-all” treatment model. However, some of the therapies our clients can expect to receive are:

  • Psychotherapy
  • EMDR
  • Family Systems Therapy
  • Spiritual counselling
  • Mindfulness
  • RTMS
  • Somantic Experiencing
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT
  • Positive psychology
  • Hypnotherapy

In short, no. Our staff are very experienced in dealing with high-profile individuals and as such we understand the value of complete privacy. The only way that someone will find out that you attended Addcounsel is if you choose to tell them.

Our treatment programs are bespoke, and as such they do not have to have a set finish date. If you decide that you need to extend your stay with us, then we will extend your stay as long as you want.
If you decide that you need additional help upon leaving treatment, we offer tailored aftercare plans which can be carried out all over the world. This means that at any point you can have a member of our team with you, wherever you decide to go.

Absolutely. At Addcounsel, we pride ourselves on minimal disruption to the lifestyles of our clients. We want them to feel at home and comfortable during their time with us, so your staff can either stay with you or we can accommodate them in one of our exclusive Central London properties. We do provide a chef, but you are of course welcome to bring your own.
Addcounsel is also able to provide house staff, butlers, and private security if our clients require it.
