CBT-e
Eating disorders can affect every aspect of your life. They impact your physical health, mental well-being, and relationships with others. Eating-related issues may dominate your thoughts and become the priority in your day-to-day routine.
Living with an eating disorder is hard – but there is help available. Enhanced cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT-e) is an evidence-based ‘transdiagnostic’ treatment method that effectively treats all types of eating disorders, addressing the root causes of disturbed eating, and guiding clients to mental and physical wellness.
CBT-e emphasises the interactions between your thoughts and behaviours, identifying negative patterns and turning them into more positive ones. It focuses on the present, supporting you to make meaningful real-time changes as you progress through treatment and reach your recovery goals.
At Addcounsel, we offer CBT-e as part of our holistic recovery program for clients with eating disorders and any co-occurring mental health conditions. Our expert psychiatrists, psychologists, and other professionals deliver the highest tier of clinical care to each client on a one-to-one basis. Our services are exclusive and luxurious, providing clients with the privacy and comfort they need.
How CBT-e Works
CBT-e uses the shared underpinning of eating disorders – over-evaluation of shape and weight – to develop a recovery program that can support clients living with bulimia, anorexia, binge eating, and non-specified eating disorders. Well-established as the leading treatment for bulimia, research has shown CBT-e to effectively support the recovery of all types of the condition.
During CBT-e sessions, you work with a therapist to identify the underlying causes of your eating behaviours and develop healthy habits. This may involve:
- Addressing the over-evaluation of shape and weight
- Self-monitoring thoughts and emotions that surround eating
- Developing and maintaining regular eating habits with planned meals
CBT-e also works with clients to overcome any underlying issues that drive eating disorders, such as clinical perfectionism, interpersonal issues, and low self-esteem. Psychologists and psychiatrists identify these issues early in treatment and address them alongside the rest of the program.
A typical CBT-e program is 20 sessions (for clients with a healthy weight) or 40 sessions (for clients with an unhealthy weight), but this may be extended according to the needs of each client. At the end of the program, the therapist works with the client to develop an aftercare plan that sets realistic expectations and provides strategies to deal with future challenges.
How CBT-e Can Help You
CBT-e treatment can support you to overcome your eating disorder and learn to love and value yourself.
Overcoming an eating disorder can change your life in many ways. Healthy eating habits improve your physical health, giving you more energy to do the things you love. You may also feel less depressed, tired, and irritable. CBT-e treatment alleviates the stress and preoccupation with eating and body image, giving you the mental space to relax or explore new ideas.
CBT-e treatment can improve your relationships too. It may make it easier to go out with friends and share food or cook together. Broad CBT-e may teach you the skills to resolve interpersonal problems and develop stronger and more stable friendships.
As a leading treatment for eating disorders, CBT-e is proven to help clients recover and become the best version of themselves. At Addcounsel, our expert psychiatrists and psychologists can offer you an in-depth assessment to determine how CBT-e can work for you.

Addcounsel are the only luxury treatment centre in London who offer a network of 80 specialists on a one-to-one basis to their clients. We pride ourselves on focussing on clinical excellence, meaning that we are client focussed but results driven. We understand what it is to work with wealthy clients; we know that it is not always easy and we know how to treat the complex and unique challenges it can entail.
We carry out a thorough diagnosis with our team of expert medical and psychiatric practitioners; this enables us to not only know what the client’s immediate problem is but the underlying factors which may be affecting it. We use this to provide a bespoke holistic treatment program in which every single aspect of the client is looked after, from their physical to their mental health. We are well equipped to match both our clients therapeutic and lifestyle needs, and we provide ongoing care plans with the goal of enabling our clients to have long lasting and consistent recovery.
Our treatment programs are delivered on a case-by-case basis. Humans are all individuals, and at Addcounsel we recognise that. This is why our program is always tailored to the needs of the client as a person, rather than trying to apply a “one-size-fits-all” treatment model. However, some of the therapies our clients can expect to receive are:
- Psychotherapy
- EMDR
- Family Systems Therapy
- Spiritual counselling
- Mindfulness
- RTMS
- Somantic Experiencing
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT
- Positive psychology
- Hypnotherapy
In short, no. Our staff are very experienced in dealing with high-profile individuals and as such we understand the value of complete privacy. The only way that someone will find out that you attended Addcounsel is if you choose to tell them.
Our treatment programs are bespoke, and as such they do not have to have a set finish date. If you decide that you need to extend your stay with us, then we will extend your stay as long as you want.
If you decide that you need additional help upon leaving treatment, we offer tailored aftercare plans which can be carried out all over the world. This means that at any point you can have a member of our team with you, wherever you decide to go.
Absolutely. At Addcounsel, we pride ourselves on minimal disruption to the lifestyles of our clients. We want them to feel at home and comfortable during their time with us, so your staff can either stay with you or we can accommodate them in one of our exclusive Central London properties. We do provide a chef, but you are of course welcome to bring your own.
Addcounsel is also able to provide house staff, butlers, and private security if our clients require it.
