The Physical Effects of Trauma on the Brain

Trauma can lead to a range of debilitating physical and psychological health conditions. Most notably, trauma can result in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is characterised by intense flashbacks to the traumatic event(s), nightmares, hyperarousal, and disturbing emotions and memories. Survivors of PTSD have been known to engage in avoidant behaviours such as social withdrawal and substance abuse.
